Mom (England and Scotland)

Author: Ann
Date of Trip: March 2004

Driving in my full size van with my family from Germany throughout France across the English Channel by Ferry to England. With my own set of wheels we went from Canterbury up to York then down to Salisbury to see the sights. We stayed at Bed and Breakfast places each place.

In Salisbury when we drove up to our Bed and Breakfast the land lord came out to greet us. He came to the right side of the car to greet the driver and was surprised to see the steering wheel on the left. My husband had to work in Germany so I was there with my two teenage sons and my 8 year old daughter. They showed us our rooms and the lovely garden in the back of the B&B. They were not sure of who would sleep in the two rooms we rented. I finally figured out that the Landlord didn't know that I was with my sons and daughter. But when we finally got that sorted out, we had a lovely time touring Salisbury Cathedral and other sights in Salisbury. The breakfast the next morning was delicious.

After leaving Salisbury we drove up to the Hadrian Wall and found an address for a B&B from a book with addresses of B&Bs. It was a working dairy farm. The kids enjoyed watching them bringing in the cattle for feeding. We traveled the next day to Stirling, Scotland the B&B was much more expensive than the dairy farm. We found the people there were not as friendly as the other places we stayed. But every place we stayed was a memorable experience and if one really wanted to get to know the UK I would recommend staying at B&Bs. It's the place to get to know the local people better and to chat with and exchange ideas and experiences.
