Mighty Niagara Gorge

Author: clasinvest
Date of Trip: October 2007

The thundering beauty of Niagara Falls, itself, is spectacular. But little did we know how much more there is to see and do. We used an audio driving tour to follow the amazing Niagara Gorge, north to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

This narrow, river gorge carries the water from 4 of the 5 Great Lakes from the Falls out to Lake Ontario. Small wonder that in addition to the wonderful rock formations, we could see class 6 rapids along the way. One would have to visit the area before Nov 1st to see these rapids, since the flow of water above the Falls is reduced in the off season.

In addition to all the stops along the tour, we took in a play at the famous Shaw Festival. There are an abundance of quaint shops, boutiques, spas and restaurants in NOTL. As with this whole area there was plenty of history to learn since this was a strategic location during the War of 1812. The information gleaned from the tour made it possible for us to take our time and yet still learn everything without taking a bus, a real plus. A prime feature of this destination, the world class wineries, topped off our trip. Well....we DID gamble a little at the Casino. That was fun, too.

There are both high rise hotels with magnificent views and comfortable, quiet B&Bs. And, while in the area we hopped over to Buffalo to have some original chicken wings. We would definitely recommend this destination for seniors, families (Clifton Hill has all the glitz and activity the kids love!), history and geology lovers as well as wine connoisseurs.
