Almost Heaven (West Virginia)Author: elizabeth mithcell
Date of Trip: January 2001
Almost Heaven, West Virginia Thomas and Davis, WV, are home to some of West Virginia's best hiking, camping, and skiing; but early December is the tween season. Having signed up for a wood-carving class, December 1 in Thomas, we needed a convenient place to stay.
By chance we happened onto the Bright Morning B&B in Davis. A former boarding house for lumberers, the B&B offers about 8 rooms and a small cabin. The rooms are comfortable and furnished with antiques from the mountains. To get pictures of the rooms on the web site, the owner has used "Mouse on the House", a clever set of links that are entered by clicking on a map of rooms. The breakfast is served in the Bright Morning Cafe, a small public breakfast and lunch room -- any entree on the menu. And what a menu, an apple, bacon, cheese omelet; banana french toast; and so much more.
The location is perfect for taking advantage of the out-door sports, but also for just hanging out. Within walking distance were several small restaurants including Muttley's Steak House, which sports its own wine selection. [I recommend the merlot.] Down the road in Thomas, the Purple Fiddle offers simple nutritional food, some mountain crafts, and weekend mountain entertainment. It's one of the hottest places to be in the area. Flying Pigs just down the street is a modest breakfast/lunch restaurant, where locals gather regularly.
Don't discount this part of the Mountain State because of its size; it is home to many hidden treasures.
