Multi-City Flight Searches

New York - Tampa - Boston - San Francisco - New York
This might seem like an unusual itinerary, but we wanted to test major cities that are served by the discounters to see how the booking engines stack up. The lowest price? Kayak came up cheapest with a $668 ticket.

  • Kayak.com
Lowest Price: $668 through CheapTickets including taxes and fees on AirTran. Nonstop flights started at $721.

  • Orbitz.com
Lowest Price: $669 per person, including taxes and fees, through AirTran.

  • Expedia.com
Despite repeated attempts, no flights matched our search.

  • Travelocity.com
Lowest Price: $844 including taxes and fees on multiple carriers: Delta, US Airways and United. The Web site walked us through every leg of the trip and allowed us to select each flight leg from a couple of options. We chose flights based solely on price to get the $844 ticket. Two of the legs included stops.

So what does this all mean? While the booking engines and aggregator sites may ease the difficult process of booking a multi-city trip, the fact is that you can't get hooked on just one Web site to do all your travel booking or research. When traveling in Europe and Asia, familiarize yourself with the local discounters and do the math -- the money you save may not be worth the aggravation of returning to the U.S. via the same foreign city you arrived in. The moral of the story: Do your research, compare, be aware of all your options and always dig a little deeper.
