Never pack your heaviest clothing items when you could be wearing them on the plane -- this includes shoes! You may not win any fashion awards in your Gore-Tex hiking boots, but who is going to be looking at your feet on a flight anyway? Wear your bulky shoes instead of putting them in your carry-on bag.
