If you're planning to explore Japan using its efficient rail system, consider a JR East Pass. Starting at $165 per person, the pass includes train travel to destinations such as Tokyo, Nagano and Mount Fuji, and is good for either consecutive or flexible use. The consecutive pass can be used for either five or 10 travel days in a row, while the flexible pass is good for three travel days over a 10-day period or four travel days over a one-month period. Children ages 6 - 11 pay half the adult fare, and youth travelers ages 12 - 25 enjoy discounts up to 20 percent.
