A Portland institution, the historic Heathman Hotel has been welcoming guests since the 1920's. Rooms are on the small side but are sumptuously decorated. Picky sleepers can take their pick from the bed menu (catch your Z's on a European featherbed, a European pillow-top or a Tempur-Pedic). In addition to a fitness suite and business center, there's a library featuring the works of authors who have stayed at the hotel -- including Sherman Alexie, Douglas Adams, Alice Walker, Khaled Hosseini and Anthony Bourdain.
