Ashford Castle

Ashford Castle Estate
Cong, County Mayo
Ireland

When the Prince of Wales visited Ashford Castle in 1906, the Guinness family built the George V restaurant, where today diners still sit under 11 Waterford crystal chandeliers. The oldest area of the castle, dating from the 13th century, contains its posh staterooms. Nearby archeological sites include Lough (Lake) Carra's Doon Promontory Fort and its late Bronze Age trails; the area was also the location for filming of John Ford's "The Quiet Man" starring Maureen O'Hara.
