The landmark American Colony Hotel, once the palace of a Turkish pasha and his four wives, is our top pick in Jerusalem for luxury and romance. Colorful gardens surround a historic building adorned with elegant blue tile work, painted wood ceilings and arched windows. If you can afford it, spring for one of the ultra-romantic Pasha rooms or suites, which have the most historic character and ambience. Our only quibble? The location isn't as convenient to the major sites as it could be; you'll need to take a taxi after dark.
