lubeck germanyIn this month’s featured review, reader Lyn Hargreave describes a journey in which she aimed to experience Germany “as a traveler, not a tourist.”

She accomplished that through a cultural exchange organization called Friendship Force International: “Every night, we were treated to dinner in different homes, as we were previously during our stay near Hamburg. Our hosts planned and showed us what we asked to see. So easy! No cars to rent, no train schedules to hassle with. The hospitality of new friends through Friendship Force International made this a warm and very personal experience. We now look forward to welcoming these new friends to our homes next year.”

svartifoss waterfall icelandIn this month’s featured review, reader Shannon Colman names five places any visitor to Iceland should check out — as well as one to skip. On her must-see list is a waterfall in Skaftafell National Park: “The most spectacular thing about Svartifoss is the structure of the basalt columns behind the water — their rigidness evokes a sense of formality and order,” wrote Shannon. “I described them as resembling the pipes on an organ at a funeral, sitting in position, ready to release their morbid tones.”

segovia aqueduct spainIn this month’s featured review, reader Betsy Lubis shares her memories of a three-week trip through Spain. “Impressions of and experiences in Segovia: a) beautiful setting tucked between arid hills, b) Alcazar, Roman Wall, aqueduct, all quite impressive, c) the ponche segoviano (marzipan) cake at Limon and Menta was the best part of our day and the best pastry we’d eat on the entire trip, d) dinner at a pizza place with kids playing in a ball pit, e) guys slathering up wall posters announcing a protest against a proposed golf course. ‘Golf is only for rich men,’ one of them informed us. And, golf wastes water in a country running out of water, their sign proclaimed.”

copper canyon train mexicoIn this month’s featured review, reader vagabondginger shares the highlights of a seven-day trip through the Copper Canyon region of Mexico. “We boarded the El Chepe train in El Fuerte to the Posada Barrancas stop, winding through tunnels and across bridges,” wrote vagabondginger. “It goes from sea level to 8,000 feet in 150 miles. Barranca del Cobre or The Copper Canyon is actually several canyons and its gigantic gorges are larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon, but it is different as it is more verdant.”

couple freedom square ruse bulgariaIn this month’s featured review, reader Vic Garcia shares the highs and lows of a river cruise along the Danube. “The best experience was a home-hosted meal in Croatia,” wrote Vic. “We have been on 15+ of these experiences and this one may have been the best. The husband and wife were so welcoming — he kissed the hand of each of the five ladies in our group and she hugged us all. They both served us a delicious Croatian meal accompanied with the usual beverages — but these had been locally made — everything was EXCELLENT!”

drayton hall charlestonIn this month’s featured review, reader Ben Szweda pursues his quest to visit every U.S. state with a trip to South Carolina and Georgia. “On my third day in Charleston I headed to Drayton Hall (plantation) for a guided tour of the house,” wrote Ben. “This property is just one mile away from Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. I chose however to visit Drayton because after visiting two plantations in Louisiana I had been disappointed that they were so made up. Unlike Magnolia, Drayton Hall advertises to be just the opposite: ‘preserved, not restored.’ There is truth in the advertising slogan and I therefore thoroughly enjoyed my tour.”

maligne lake spirit island jasper national parkIn this month’s featured review, reader Shannon Colman discovers the scenic panoramas that have made the Canadian Rockies famous. “We stopped at Maligne Canyon to see the gushing falls and deep gorges, then went onto Maligne Lake, where a boat took us out to Spirit Island,” wrote Shannon. “This acts as a base for some of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen — bright blue lakes surrounded by snow-capped mountains. It was like something from a fairy tale. The colour of the water is truly astounding.”

In this month’s featured review, reader Margot MacPherson Brewer explores a country few Westerners visit: Korea. “Jeju Island is a tropical paradise that is under the radar and hosts mainly an ongoing influx of tourists from the Chinese mainland,” wrote Margot. “Jeju’s location in relation to South Korea combined with North Korea’s nuclear sabre-rattling this spring had clearly discouraged many Western visitors and we encountered less than a half dozen in our travels on Jeju.”

In this month’s featured review, reader olddocw writes about a recent adventure in Alaska. “The wildlife were the real stars of the show. Many sightings of humpback whales, harbor seals on the ice floes, Steller sea lions basking on the rocks, taking in the rare sunny day,” olddocw tells us. “Saw some Dall sheep up on the hillside of some of the larger islands. A group of dolphins enjoyed racing in front of the boat for about 20 minutes. Overall a wonderful experience which I would highly recommend.”

In this month’s featured review, reader Diana Ziemniak writes about her first trip to Costa Rica. “I took over 800 photos to capture our memories of the white face monkeys in front of me at the beach, howler monkeys just above me, colorful macaws soaring the skies, toucans and a variety of so many other birds — a nature lover’s paradise,” Diana wrote. “The flowers were so colorfully vivid, reflecting the lushness we experienced in the rain forest.”
