Amazing Race Recap: 03/14/10
the amazing race 16 louie michael detour main de massiges wwiWinners: Detectives Louie and Michael had another strong leg, winning for the second week in a row. Their prize was a pair of 55-inch HDTV's.

Eliminated: After multiple failed attempts at the Morse code Detour, knowing they were behind all the rest of the teams, married couple Joe and Heidi hunkered down in their WWI-era trench and waited to be officially eliminated.

Detour: On the site of a WWI battle between the Germans and the French, teams had to choose between In the Trenches (use a field manual to translate a message in Morse code) and Under Fire (crawl across a battlefield to retrieve a message from a soldier). Not a single team voluntarily chose the In the Trenches option, and when we saw Joe and Heidi (who were forced to do it after being U-Turned) struggling with the rapid transmission of the Morse code, it was easy to see why. We wish Brandy could have seen how much difficulty Joe and Heidi had -- maybe then she would have stopped whining about how hard and dirty it was to crawl through a trench. Suck it up, lady.

U-Turn: A U-Turn is a chance for one team to force another to do whichever Detour task they hadn't previously completed. After being irritated by Joe's boasting that none of the other teams would hinder him on the Race, Louie and Michael U-Turned him and Heidi, deciding that he needed a little taste of karma. Are you feeling hindered yet, Joe?

Speed Bump: As a penalty for coming in last on the previous leg, dating couple Jeff and Jordan had to perform an extra task known as a Speed Bump. They were required to reinforce a section of a trench using branches.

Biggest Blunder: Despite their confident words about not finishing last this week, Jeff and Jordan seemed to be trying their hardest to fall behind. They spent the first part of the leg playing a sort of "ring around the roundabout" game, driving aimlessly around traffic circles and barely managing to get out of the town where they first started. When they finally made it to the Detour, Jordan decided she didn't like the Under Fire option and dug in her heels like a dog who didn't want to go to the vet. Need we remind her of that measly million-dollar prize?

Savviest Travel Move: Louie and Michael wisely asked a local postal worker for directions when they were lost, knowing that few people would know the streets better.

Funniest Moment: The Amazing Race editors often provide subtitles for the audience when a Racer's words are difficult to understand, but this week even they were stumped when Jordan emerged from the bakery with her mouth full of bread. Her words to Jeff were subtitled merely as "??????" (That's pretty much how we feel every time she's onscreen.)

Must-See Sight: Sure, we should probably pick the battlefield at La Main de Massiges for its historic significance, but those fresh baguettes looked too delicious to resist. Sign us up for a trip to that little French bakery -- or any French bakery.
